Maryland men’s basketball returns for its second season in the Big Ten with confidence, after finishing last season with the program’s best record since 2002 — when the team won its first and only national championship.
The Terrapins will look to improve on last season’s second-place finish in the Big Ten and Round of 32 exit from the NCAA tournament. Newcomers Diamond Stone, Rasheed Sulaimon, Robert Carter Jr., Jaylen Brantley and others will fill in the scoring hole left by Dez Wells and prove to the nation that the Terps deserve their No. 3 ranking in the Associated Press preseason poll.

After Melo Trimble went 2-for-15 from the field in a loss 64-61 loss to Michigan State in the Big Ten semifinals, the sophomore is 36-for-119 (30.3 percent) in the Terps’ last 10 games. He missed a potential go-ahead lay-up with four seconds left against the Spartans and his desperation heave with less than a second left fell short. After the loss, Trimble said he was surprised the refs didn’t call a foul on that last shot. Trimble still leads the Terps with 14.4 points and 5.1 assists per game.
Jake Layman had a season-high 26 points Friday in a win over 97-86 win over Nebraska in the Big Ten quarterfinals. The senior doesn’t want his college career to end and has told teammates to seize the opportunity. This might be their best chance to advance deep into the NCAA Tournament, Layman said. He is fourth on the team in scoring with 11.2 points per game and third in rebounds with 5.3 per game.
Diamond Stone has cemented his spot in the starting lineup entering postseason play. While it took Stone more than nine minutes to score in his first postseason appearance, a 97-86 win over Nebraska, he finished with 23 points, second on the team. That was also the second-highest point total of his career. Stone, who is a projected first-round draft pick, is second on the team with 12.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
Rasheed Sulaimon is the Terp with the most postseason experience. Before he was dismissed from the Duke program last year, he was part of two NCAA Tournament teams. He advanced to the Elite Eight as a freshman in 2013. Sulaimon is fifth on the team with 11.1 points per game and is one of the team’s best defenders. He also provides leadership as a senior.
Robert Carter Jr. led the Terps with 18 points against Michigan State and put the Terps ahead with less than seven minutes remaining. Carter also had a team-high eight rebounds and leads the team with 6.8 boards per game. While the Terps couldn’t pull out the victory, Carter showed off his long-range shooting as he went 3-for-5 on 3-pointers. He developed that shooting stroke as a young boy in Thomasville, Georgia, hoisting shots constantly on a hoop across the street from his home.
Damonte Dodd battled foul trouble during the Big Ten Tournament. He had four fouls in a 97-86 win over Nebraska in the quarterfinals and three fouls in the 64-61 loss to Michigan State the next day. When Dodd isn’t picking up fouls, he provides an interior defensive presence. The 6-foot-11 forward averages three points per game.
Wiley is likely out for the season. He tore the meniscus in his right knee Nov. 5 and had surgery the following week. He’s expected to miss four months. Wiley’s injury comes after he transformed his body in the offseason and became more explosive. His injury created a thin backcourt, as well. Jared Nickens and Jaylen Brantley are the Terps’ primary backups at guard now.
The former walk-on and fan favorite had a career moment in the Terps’ first NCAA Tournament game last season when he swiped away Valparaiso’s last-second shot attempt. And for a time this season, Varun Ram was the Terps’ first point guard off the bench during a stretch in Big Ten play. Now, he’s the Terps’ third-choice point guard off the bench. Ram is averaging 4.6 minutes per game.
Growing up, the freshman from Indianapolis, Indiana, played on one of the best AAU teams in the nation, the Indy Hoosiers. Similar to Kent Auslander and Trevor Anzmann, he hasn’t seen many minutes, but he provides help on the scout team. He did cap off the Terps’ 86-63 win over Rhode Island with a late 3-pointer.
After he was rumored to be on the hot seat entering last season, Turgeon led the Terps to a program-record 26 regular-season wins. He also helped get the Terps to the NCAA tournament for the first time in his four-year tenure. Now entering his fifth season in College Park, he will be tasked with managing one of the most-hyped teams in the nation. Perhaps the biggest challenge for Turgeon will be distributing minutes on a roster he said has “eight starters.”
